Find Out About Friday - How a Sandwich Can Help Your Card Making

One of the questions that I am often asked about card making is 'What are the golden rules?', well if truth be told I am not sure that there are any golden rules, as card making allows you to express your creativity.  There are however some principles which can really help, and for this week's Find Out About Friday I am going to share some very sage advice which was shared with me and which I think will help you too.

Making a great card is a lot like making a sandwich!  Now before you rush to the kitchen let me explain ...  One of the most popular sandwiches that you can purchase is the Bacon, Lettuce and Tomato or as it is more often known the BLT and this is the sandwich you need to think about when you are making a card.

The B in our card making Sandwich stands for Background.  What is your stamped image sitting on?  It could be more stamping, some patterned paper or even a plain layer with some embossing on it.  This forms the backdrop for the card and makes it look complete.  On this card the background has been stamped with the Gorgeous Grunge Stamp Set.

This card also demonstrates the L of our BLT - Layers.  Adding some layers to your card can really help it look great.  Sometimes, as in this card featuring Mosaic Madness, all it takes is a layer of matching card with your focal image on it to make all the difference.

So what about the T?  In our card making sandwich T stands for Texture - adding some different textures to your card will give it a real lift.  You can achieve this by embossing a layer of your card, or by adding something that is a different texture, for example Washi Tape in the first card, a Rhinestone in the Second, or possibly some ribbon or twine.  In this final card I am going to share the texture has been created in two ways, firstly by scoring on the Very Vanilla layer and by making the Christmas Star three dimensional by folding it.

So reminding you to add background, layers and texture to your cards is how a sandwich can help your card making!
